Cold Storage Forklifts: How Sub-Zero Temperatures Affect Performance

Cold storage warehouses are their own category. What works at ambient temperature in a general warehouse can fail spectacularly at -18°C in a blast freezer application. If you’re spec’ing forklifts for cold chain operations, the standard product sheet needs a second look.

Battery chemistry behaves differently in the cold. Lead-acid batteries lose roughly 20–30% of their rated capacity at 0°C, and up to 50% at -20°C. That’s not a spec problem—it’s electrochemistry. The chemical reaction that generates current slows down as temperature drops. What this means practically: your 6-hour runtime at ambient becomes 3–4 hours in freezer conditions.

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry, like the CALT packs in our CPD-30 and CPD-35, handles cold better—capacity drop is roughly 15–20% at -10°C. Still a hit, but more manageable. Some buyers running blast freezers size up the battery pack to compensate.

Hydraulic fluid viscosity is the other variable. Cold thickens standard hydraulic oil. At -15°C, fork lift and tilt response slows noticeably. Spec’ing a low-viscosity cold-weather hydraulic fluid (ISO 15 or 22 grade) before the machine goes into service saves headaches later.

Condensation causes electrical issues. Moving a machine from -20°C storage into a warm loading area causes condensation on circuit boards and connectors. Sealed electrical enclosures matter. Ask specifically about ingress protection rating on control modules.

Operator comfort compounds the problem. A cold operator makes more errors. If your team rotates through cold storage continuously, the forklift cabin setup (heated seat, ergonomic controls, good visibility) affects safety outcomes, not just comfort.

Cold chain is a specialized application. If that’s your context, bring it up before selecting a model—the configuration conversation is different.
