Cold Start Tips—Preparing Your Mini Excavator Diesel for Freezing Mornings
Winter mornings test every diesel engine. Mini excavators are no exception. A few habits make the difference between firing up and calling for a jump.
Glow plugs are step one. Turn the key to preheat—don’t skip it, don’t rush it. Let the glow plug indicator cycle fully. On a cold morning at or below freezing, cycle the glow plugs twice before cranking. This heats the combustion chamber enough for the diesel to ignite clean.
Battery matters more in cold. Cold cranking amps drop as temperature falls. A battery that’s fine in summer can struggle at -10°C. Keep terminals clean and tight. If the machine sits for days between starts, consider a trickle charger.

The SN-KT22 with its Yanmar engine starts reliably in cold conditions partly because the engine calibration accounts for cold-start enrichment. The SN-KT20 with the Laidong 385 includes glow plugs sized for cold markets.
Oil viscosity is the hidden issue. Summer-grade hydraulic oil turns thick in cold. Thick oil makes the pump work harder, slows cylinder movement, and strains the engine during warm-up. For cold-climate operation, switch to a lower-viscosity hydraulic fluid before winter hits. Check your manual for the recommended ISO grade for sub-zero operation.
Engine oil choice. 15W-40 is common in moderate climates. Below freezing, 10W-30 or 5W-40 flows faster during cold starts, reducing wear during the critical first seconds after firing.
Let it warm up. Don’t jump in and start digging the moment it fires. Let the engine idle for a few minutes. Cycle the boom and bucket gently to move warmed oil through the system. Hydraulic components last longer when they reach operating temperature before heavy load.
Fuel considerations. Diesel gels in extreme cold. If you’re working below -15°C, winter-blend diesel or a fuel additive prevents gelling in the lines. Water in the fuel separator freezes too—drain it regularly in winter months.
Storing the machine? Park it under cover if possible. A tarp at minimum keeps frost off electrical connections. Disconnect the battery or keep it on a maintainer.
Cold doesn’t have to mean downtime. Just a routine.
