What's the Right Cutting Width for Commercial Mowing? A Practical Breakdown

Cutting width is one of those specs that sounds simple until you realize it interacts with five other variables. Here’s how to think about it systematically rather than just picking the biggest number.

Productivity math starts with cutting width. A 1000mm cutting width covers exactly twice the area per pass as a 500mm deck, all else being equal. If you’re comparing the SN-550D (550mm) to the SN-1000DL (1000mm), and your job is clearing flat open ground, the 1000mm machine completes the work in roughly half the time.

But terrain changes the calculation. On a steep, narrow embankment, a wider deck becomes harder to position accurately. The machine’s width increases with deck width, and narrower access paths or irregular slope edges mean you’re repositioning more often. The efficiency gain from cutting width partially disappears in complex terrain.

Vegetation density changes it further. A 1000mm deck on dense two-year brush is harder on the engine than a 550mm deck. The SN-1000B’s 608cc engine handles the torque demand from a 1000mm brush cut. A 196cc engine (as found in the SN-550B) is calibrated for its 550mm deck width. Match the engine displacement to the deck width and vegetation type—don’t try to bridge the gap.

Practical recommendations by application:

ApplicationRecommended WidthMachine
Golf course rough / maintained turf, large area1000mmSN-1000DL
Roadside embankment, moderate brush550–800mmSN-550D / SN-800DL
Dense brush reclamation, steep slopes1000mm brush specSN-1000B
Light commercial lawn, tight access550mmSN-550S / SN-550W

The SN-800DL sits in the middle as a 800mm tracked option for buyers who find 550mm too narrow for their open-area jobs but don’t need the full power spec of the 1000mm machines.
